About
Confidante is a photo research and licensing studio for advertising agencies, global brands, and editorial teams, with a genuine love for the hunt.
Confidante doesn’t hold images. It knows where they are: in photographers’ personal archives, institutional collections, and places search engines never reach. Drawing on 25 years inside the photography industry, the studio finds the right image, negotiates the license, and makes sure the photographer is paid fairly. As production budgets tighten, licensing existing work often goes further than commissioning new work, and the image you need may already exist.
Every published photograph leaves dozens behind: the outtakes, the other frames from the same roll, the work that never found an editor.

Most of it sits on hard drives and in flat files and shoeboxes, known only to the person who made it. Angie Smith has spent her career learning where those images live and how to bring them back into the world.
Smith studied photography at Bard College under Stephen Shore, then worked in Los Angeles for photographers João Canziani and Jeremy and Claire Weiss of Day19, and for the Lucie Foundation. As a photo editor at Life, Men’s Journal and Complex, and later as a freelance photo researcher for the Los Angeles Times, she found that the search itself was what she loved most: following a lead, finding the photographer, and making the case for an image no one else had considered. She founded Confidante to do that work full time, both for clients who need more than a search bar can give them and for photographers whose archives deserve a second life.

Historical and community research
Not every important image lives in a commercial archive.
Some of the most meaningful visual research Confidante has done has nothing to do with advertising. Confidante spent a year tracking down former residents of a historic neighborhood in Boise, Idaho. We reviewed hundreds of personal photo archives, digitized them and recorded the oral histories. The result was a public archive — a community’s memory, preserved and made accessible.
History, memory, place. If your project lives in that territory, Confidante would love to hear about it.

Photographers
Confidante doesn’t take in archives or represent photographers. Your work stays yours.
It keeps track of the work that exists, including personal projects, outtakes, and series that never found a home, so that when a client needs something specific, the right photographer gets the call.
